The ʻokina is a Hawaiian letter. The ʻokina style that should be used on Wikipikia is still debated, but it is generally agreed that either ‘ or ʻ should be used, and not an apostrophe (') or a tick (`). To type ʻokina, you can do the following:

  • use the {{'}} or {{okina}} templates
  • on Windows, type Alt-0145
  • on Mac OS X:
    • type Option-]
    • enable the Hawaiian keyboard layout by going to System Preferences > International > Input Menu and checking the "Hawaiian" option. You can then type an ʻokina simply by pressing the apostrophe (') button.

It is possible for an automated bot to convert all instances of apostrophes, ticks, and the {{okina}} template to an ʻokina.
